Aha! Here comes a New Post!

Hi, this is Iain Again.
Yes, I'm still alive and well... Much better than this blog is.

However, I'll be reviving this blog if I have readers and a reason to... Anyways, I'm just about to move to a new, bigger, better blog.

I'm going to write about my experance with Linux Today.

Now, for those of you who don't know, I recently switched from Windows XP to Linux Full-Time.
Its been nice. I'll go through a quick list of pros and cons.

Pros:
  • Faster
  • Better- Looking (compiz effects and gnome)
  • More applications
  • Cost Less
  • Firefox all the way!
  • Open Office is Great
  • No Crashes Anymore!
  • UI is great!
  • No Viruses - Root Permissions
Cons:
  • You need to troubleshoot to get some stuff working like:
  • Sound, Dual Screen, Sleep.
  • Command Line - Either Love it or not, although most things can be configured without it, it makes many things a lot easier if you get used to it.
  • Limited Proprietary Application Support... (same for macs too)
  • No Photoshop :(
I installed using the Wubi Installer, make it really easy, I was up and running in 30mins.
I still have all my windows document accessable by linux, and its still there if I need to boot into it.
I also had a few problems getting the right configuraltion for my dual-screens, but it was nt that bad.
WINE was able to get all the Flash loaders for school applications I needed working, which is good.
Sound was horrible to configure for Wimba, which wasn't really made to work with linux that well... Had to force the default drivers to headphones instead of speakers, not bad... would have been easy without USB headphones.

I don't game or watch many videos on my computer, (work work work... Isn't that what DVD players and Wiis are for?)...

Support for APTANA (Code Editor for Websites) was great and I've had little or no problems since.

- Iain.

42nd Post

It doesn't seem like it, although this is, indeed, my 42nd post. Yippe!. However, I am glad that it is warming up here and I am getting outside playing - working in the yard!
However, I have a new project to advertise from beta.codejoust.com and that is the Moodle Stylizer, which styles Moodle to a nice blue color. Tell me what you think, any color scheme changes, or anything else that might be of consequence.

Comp. II Assigment - Movie Review : Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Review

In the fourth movie of the Indiana Jones series, Harrison Ford once again stars as Indiana Jones. This movie has high expectations due to the excellent reputation of the previous Indianan Jones movies. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is directed by Steven Spielberg and its script is written by George Lucas. Set in the 1950's, the movie opens in the Nevada dessert. Soviet agents force Indiana Jones into a heavily guarded US hangar. They were trying to find an artifact with seemingly great powers. Then both the Soviets and Indiana Jones escape. Indiana Jones then starts his journey around the world in a wild goose chase looking for a crystal skull of great power in competition with the Soviets. In the beginning of his journey, he meets “Mutt Williams”, acted by Shia LaBeouf. He a feisty character who helps him in his chase to find the Crystal Skull.
The movie has many classic Indiana Jones themes. Yet, it does not compare with the original brilliance in the first three movies. For instance, there was only one snake scene. Yet, there were many encounters of spooky creatures. The special effects in the movie were well done. The special effects in the final climax were well done, making the unbelievable look believable. The unbelievability of many of the scenes made the movie even more exciting. The moving stone defenses and contraptions were brilliant. They added to the excitement, but they did not become the focus.
The good and the bad characters were well defined from the start. There were not many surprises regarding what side the characters were on. There was almost no conflict between the characters and no fatal dilemmas. The story and plot were very shallow in terms of character conflict, unlike the previous Indiana Jones movies. The plot mostly served as a buildup to the final, exciting climax, but not for a buildup of conflicts and ideas.
However, Harrison Ford's acting of Indiana Jones was well done. He was able to keep much of the contrast between his life as a professor and his life as a adventurous archaeologist. He also played the part as an older Indiana Jones quite well. He didn't overact the role of being an old Indiana Jones. However, the role of Mutt Williams was not well done. In the beginning of the movie, he was a young man in the city, then, as it progresses, he becomes much like Indiana Jones without any progression. However, Cate Blanchett’s acting the role of the evil Dr. Irina Spalko, was well done. In the movie, she accurately portrayed the traits of a ruthless, sharp, and determined stereotypical Soviet.
The editing and score of the movie added to the suspense. The classic Indiana Jones theme song showed up when he was victorious. The editing was not overdone, but the movie moved rather quickly. The scenes should have been longer and built up more conflict and ideas.
This movie has the typical Indiana Jones violence and scary scenes. The Soviets were ruthless, and they did not mind killing others. There were plenty of guns, handguns in the movie were used a tool for threatening, and the machine guns fired everywhere but rarely hit their target. There was a lot of fist fighting and fencing. As in all of the Indiana Jones movies, there were a plethora of scary scenes and creatures, and this movie is no exception.
Overall, the movie was a good continuation of the series, but there was nothing outstanding in regard to the story. It is worth seeing as a good adventurous follow up to the Indiana Jones series. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a great action adventure, however, I wish it would have had a better plot and conflict between characters.

Google

Google,
What a name it is today.
They started out small as a search company and grew... and grew... and grew..., The rest is history
Recently, they have branched out from their internet search business and added some new tools. I will outline some of these tools, their benefits, and why to use then versus other tools.
The first is Gmail.
Gmail is the best webmail client in my opinion, It allows for you to access your mail using another client (outlook, thunderbird) or online, I've never received ONE piece of spam using it, and it has chat to put the cherry on top.
In comparison, Yahoo! mail only allows you to access it in your browser and their interface is rather slow and clunky compared to Gmail's lightweight and fast webmail client.
Another service is Picasa Web albums, it is a great, simple, and fast service to share photos, you do not need Picasa to use it, but having Picasa is great also. It is a simple, quick, free and efficient photo organizer.
Finally, They also have Google Reader, a browser based RSS (news feed) reader.
For this, I prefer to use My Yahoo for its superior content, but google is quickly catching up with iGoogle.
Oh, and I nearly forgot about Google Docs, an online based office alternative.
It is great for lightweight and free document work, although I do not wish to trust it with all my stuff, preferring to use Microsoft Office or OpenOffice.
I like to use it for quick email editing, web publishing (the code it exports is clean and simple) along with group document sharing. I think there are better alternatives to it though, but like most of Google's offerings, its easy, quick, and simple. (not to mention integrated with Gmail.)
They also made a good decision allowing for one google sign in to be used everywhere.
This makes it easy and fast to sign into many services, while not sharing it with other companies (I think that was one of Microsoft's Paramount mistakes with windows live id)
Oh, and I forgot to mention blogger, but I'll save that for a later date.
P.S., Chrome looks promising, but isn't anywhere near a polished brower of Firefox.

Favorite Lookup Site

This web service has served as my dictionary, encylopdia, thesaurus, and anything along those lines for about 3 years. This site is http://answers.com/ It aggregates Wikipedia, Webster's Dictionary, Encylopedia Brittanica, Wordnet, Thompson Gale, and many other sources into one page so you don't have to go to numerous sites to find information.
